The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code was developed by the USA Department of Commerce as a means of identifying the industry an organization belongs to.
You will see this is an excellent method by which to target the right businesses for your campaign.
There are 2,4,6 and 8 digit codes. The more digits, the more specific the industry type. Most requests are handled with 2 or 4 digits, but occasionally you may wish to look deeper and find a more specific industry type.
Example
There may be 15000 companies under the 2 digit code, then down to 8000 when you get more specific with a 4 digit subgroup. Being very detailed with an 8 digit specific code will then bring you only those companies who are in that particular sub-section of the industry.
